Yoga (meaning “union”) is a holistic system of health and wellbeing that focuses on the mind and its functions, and is concerned with self-transformation and freedom from suffering. It is an ancient and complex practice with foundations in Indian philosophy. What began as an Eastern spiritual practice has evolved to become widely popular in the West as a way of promoting physical and mental wellbeing.

Most of the scientific literature has focused on mindfulness that is developed through mindfulness meditation — a self-regulation practice based on training attention and awareness in order to bring mental processes under greater voluntary control.
